What Does a Wedding Photographer Do ?

There is a lot involved in being a wedding photographer, as well as a pure love and passion of this work, this job has many specific skills. 


I completed and passed my Open University Course in digital photography back in 2014, and more recently I successfully completed my Diploma in Wedding Photography. These courses teach many technical aspects, with theory and practical assignments throughout. It is so important that a wedding photographer understands the technical side such as lighting, camera speed and apertures and much more, as well as having the right kit and knowing how to use it. 

As a wedding photographer, I can confidently work in many different situations, and am able to think fast and adapt to the scene, the people, weather, lighting and general surroundings by understanding and knowing my camera and related equipment. This means I can enjoy watching the day unfold and capture these moments through the lens. After your special day, I will then spend time processing and editing the images, so again, education and knowledge is key to achieving the actual end results and making sure this is correct. 

A wedding photographer also needs to be able to confidently run a business, and I am very well organised in my diary, admin, backups and storage, advertising and marketing, training, accounting etc. In fact, I successfully ran (and later sold) my own business for over 15 years, so I am well experienced and understand the importance of being organised so nothing is missed. 

The Practical Side

Once you have booked me for your special day, I will contact you both about 1 month before your wedding date. We would arrange to meet up sometime between then and the wedding day to confirm the schedule for your day and the photography plan.

In the run up to the wedding, I will be in contact with you making sure I have all the information I need to ensure your day runs smoothly and you have nothing to worry about from her. This may include - 

  • Visiting the wedding ceremony venue, if a new one to me, and checking on the rules and guidelines for photography, as well as where to stand, parking, whether flash or confetti is allowed etc. 
  • visiting the reception venue and meeting the wedding co-ordinator or manager. Looking around the venue and grounds to seek out and discuss ideal photo opportunities and best compositions for you and your guests, taking into account your preferences and any rain on the day. (these 2 visits may be in the same location, such as a hotel, though different rooms). 
  • testing the travel times and driving the routes, including checking postcodes, distance, any road works or diversions
  • the night before, charging all batteries, formatting memory cards, double checking, testing and cleaning all equipment for the camera, lenses, lighting and of course remembering to pack the love heart shape umbrellas just in case!
